Tablet Troubles

Okay, so I work with a Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet it has worked great up until a few days ago where the one end of my pen (thin tipped) just stopped working. It's not chipped, cracked or mishapen in anyway, now I know that there are 'refills' that you can buy and change the tip.

My main question though is this, does this always happen where it stops working without a single thing being done too it? It's not the tablet because the other end of the pen works perfectly but I can use that to anything but completely erase something so...yeah..
